<div>FOAF was used as a counter-example in what was otherwise a good 
<a href="http://microformats.org/discuss/mail/microformats-discuss/2005-October/001196.html">post</a>
from 
<a href="http://www.blogmatrix.com">David Janes</a> about
syndication adoption, virtuous cycles and microformats. I've just
realised I didn't actually tackle his virtuous-increment angle re.
FOAF. Bah, whatever, in the process of 
<a href="http://microformats.org/discuss/mail/microformats-discuss/2005-October/001210.html">responding</a>
I got an analogy that might work:
In the same way XHTML acts as a
 substrate for microformats, RDF is the base for
micromodels.
Microformats are being designed in such a way that the syntax of
each
 can be (relatively) freely mixed in a document. RDF
vocabularies are
 designed in such a way that the model of each can be freely
mixed on
 the Web.
